Here is my illustration for this week’s Illustration Friday:
max_top_2_web_small
This takes a little bit of explanation. Initially I was thinking of applying contained to the genie in Aladdin’s lamp. I played around with that for a bit but kept coming back to this character Max, a child from a story I wrote a while ago.

I don’t want to get into the whole thing now, but there are seeds, which represent a hidden potential, kind of like Aladdin and the genie. Hence the bottle.

Eventually there will be partial color, but I had less time than I planned on today, and these things always take more time than I expect.

You can click for a larger version. As always comments and constructive criticism are welcome.

Thanks guys! Yeah Annie, hands are such a pain, I’m always thrilled when I manage to draw hands that somewhat resemble hands.

    This is gorgeous!

Illo is fabulous! You did a good job on “contained”! (And I’m jealous of your new plate set)

Thanks, glad you guys like it.

Fascinating! One can imagine many different stories triggered by this single picture. It appears real yet fantasy both at the same time.

Gorgeous illustration! Really, I mean it.

Alice- interesting reaction… the story is pretty rooted in reality but since I’m getting inspiration from Aladdin’s lamp I wonder if some of that fantasy feel is coming through? Thanks!

    Kylie- thanks!

Love the sepia tones. Certainly gives the drawing a distinctive atmosphere.

Thanks Wil! Glad it’s working, I was worried it made it too moody.

Very beautiful and full of magic! I love the sepia tones and the light on his face.

Thanks for your comment. You illustration looked so nice, and the color let your illustration more mystery.

What a sensitive image. I love the look of wonder and curiosity in the boy’s eyes. And like Annie said, great hands.
