The liveblogging, obviously, didn’t happen. Some people might be able to concentrate on writting a blog post between bouts, but I am apparently not one of them.
I did manage to get out a twitter or so during the day, so if anyone was waiting on the edge of their seats waiting to hear from me, maybe that helped.
There were no miracles, but the day went better than I had any right to expect. I started out ranked fourth from the bottom, which actually made me feel a little better. In black and white, it meant I was outclassed, and on terms of reality it meant improving my position was likely. In pools, (see previous post for explanation) I won two bouts and lost four. Of the four I lost, I thought three were within my reach, but none of those bouts were bad enough that I was particularly disappointed. I felt like I fenced well.
After pools I was re-placed to 113th. This doesn’t sound all that great, but considering I went in at about 147 of 151, it’s not too bad. Only 75% advanced to the next round, not 80 as I initially thought. I made it, barely. That was my goal for the day, and I made it, so, satisfied.
My first DE bout (to 15) was against the 16th place fencer, so I did not have high expectations. I actually took an early lead, but she kept pulling even. The score was 13-13 when the time ran out. I had priority in overtime (if no one had scored I would have won 13-13) and with twenty seconds left my opponent attacked. I pushed her blade to the side, hit her in the stomach, and won. I completely ruined this girl’s day.
That put me in the round of 64. I’d love to say I pulled off another shocking victory, but I lost the next bout. It wasn’t even close.
I probably ended up right at 64th. I’m moderately happy. I’ve had better results, but as out of practice as I am, ending up solidly in the top half isn’t half bad. Going in, I was worried that I was far out of my league and shouldn’t even have been there. After today, I’m feeling much more confidant. This was a decent re-entry to the national fencing scene, and maybe next time, I’ll practice first.
